Willoughby City Council has joined the Greater Sydney area to take part in this year’s City Nature Challenge, a global initiative that involves people discovering and documenting wildlife in their cities using the citizen science platform, iNaturalist.
Come and join us in documenting as much wildlife as possible between Friday 26 April and Monday 29 April 2024. Help Sydney compete with cities from around the world – all that is needed is you and your phone and a keen sense of curiosity! No prior experience necessary.
You will need the iNaturalist app installed on your smartphone. To install the app, scan this QR code with your smartphone and tap on Google Play if you have an Android phone, or the Apple App Store if you have an iPhone.
Once the app is installed, you’ll need to create an ID in the app and join the City Nature Challenge 2024: Willoughby project.

There are two ways that you can get involved in the City Nature Challenge 2024: Willoughby project.
The easiest way is to join the Willoughby Council Bushland Team for the City Nature Challenge – Urban Bushland BioBlitz from 9:00am to 11:00am on Saturday 27 April at Flat Rock Gully Reserve. Council staff will be on hand to assist you to get involved.
Meet in the Flat Rock Gully bush car park after turning right at the very end of Small Street, Willoughby. As well as your phone, don’t forget to also bring a bottle of water, a hat and wear sturdy walking shoes.
Find out more at the City Nature Challenge – Urban Bushland BioBlitz webpage.
If you can’t make it to Flat Rock Gully Reserve on Saturday 27 April, you can still participate at any time over the four-day challenge from Friday 26 April to Monday 29 April.
Just use the iNaturalist app to snap and upload pictures of plants, animals or even fungi to the City Nature Challenge 2024: Willoughby project in the app. You can be anywhere within the Willoughby Council area – in bushland, in a park, in the street or in your backyard.
If you need assistance with using the app, please contact Rowena Chong from Willoughby Council on 02 9777 7873 or rowena.chong@willoughby.nsw.gov.au.
